She was born in 1817 in Oesdorf Bavaria, Germany. She died on 04 Apr 1881 in Fort Loramie, Ohio. He married (2) MARY ANN DAMGI, daughter of Nicolas Damgi and Margarite Fichart on 21 Feb 1832 in Aix-Sur-Cloie, Belgium. She was born on 10 Dec 1804 in Battincourt, Belgium. She died on 28 Aug 1846 in Fort Loramie, Ohio.

Found record of 1850 Census of Peter Hummer, age 33, along with John age 10, Joney age 4, Margrett Hummer age 32, Margrett age 8, who I believe is my grandmother Margaret Hummer Ulliman.

According to records received from Carolyn Ahlbrand Peter Hummer emigrated from Belgium and on June 26,1846 arrived in New York on the ship Neree. The passenger list shows Peter and his wife Marie, daughters Marie (Helene), Janette (Marie Yanne), Magdalena and son John Peter, who would all live to adulthood, marry and have children. The passenger list also shows 3 children who would not live to adulthood: Barbara (Bobelie), Catherine and Dominique. Peter is recorded in "The Annals of St. Michael's"(1903) along with brothers Joseph and Dominic as founders of St. Michael's Parish, Berlin, Ohio. (Berlin was the precious name of Ft. Loramie)Also on the passenger list is Peter's brother Jean and his wife Marguetite and their three children Marie, Anne and Josephine.

In July 1846 Peter purchased farmland south of Berlin (Ft. Loramie) by Basinburg (a now defunct town) in Cynthian Township, where Peter and Barbara eventually lived with their daughters.

The 1850 McLean Township census shows a 3 month old daughter Marie living with Peter and Barbara but this could be a census record as no other record of this child exist elsewhere. It also lists a "Mercian" who is probably Marie Yanne (Jane) age 17, Peter(Pierre) age 13 and Magdalena age 9, all children from Peter's first marriage.

The 1860 Cynthian Township census records shows Peter and Barbara living with Magdalena age 29, Marguerite age 5 and Catherine age 4. Peter, Barbara, Marguerite and Catherine continued to live at the farm property for several years .

On Sunday 21 February, 1869 Peter went to town and after being thrown out of the local tavern, for a disagreement between French & German factions in town, he stopped in the corner of a field just outside of town where he was found the next morning frozen to death. There is a record of this in the Shelby County Democrat, Sidney, Ohio on March 5, 1869. This was at a time when the Austro Prussian and Franco Prussian War was taking place.

The 1880 Shelby County Census records of McLean Township in Ft. Loramie show Barbara Hummer as M.L. which I assume means mother in law, listed as living with Jacob And Margaret Ulliman. It lists her place of birth as Bavaria.

April 17, 2003

Information on Barbara's death given to me by Mary Ann Dunn after visiting Shelby County Court House. She was 64 at time of death and is buried at Old St. Michael's Cemetery on the north side of Rte.362 in Fort Loramie, McLean Township.

Peter and Barbara were probably married at St. Michael's Church according to records received from Carolyn Ahlbrand, great grand daughter of Catherine Hummer, who has done research on the Hummer family.

Barbara evidently traveled from Oesdorf, Bavaria to the USA and arrived in New Orleans on June 13, 1845. There were no records found of her birth or family except that her maiden name was recorded on baptismal records when her two daughters were born. This information received from Carolyn Ahlbran.

The 1870 census records show Barbara and her two daughters Marguerite and Catherine living on the family farm. The estate was not settled until 1872 and the farm sold in 1877

The 1880 census shows Barbara living with her daughter Marguerite Hummer Ulliman and Jacob Ulliman.

Jean Hummer arrived in the US with his brother Peter on June 26, 1846 with their families. Jean and Marguerite settled in Seneca County, Ohio about 100 miles northeast of Ft. Loramie where they are recorded in the 1850 and 1860 census.

The 1850 Seneca census shows Jean, Marguerite and daughters Marie age 13, Anna age 11, and Joseph age 3 plus another son John age 1

The 1860 Seneca census shows all of the above plus another son Peter age 8 and a daughter Anna age 5

Joseph is the earliest found immigrant record with his arrival as a single man age 25 at the port of New York on July 27, 1837 on the ship Great Britain. He is also recorded as purchasing 2 lots in Berlin, Ohio in 1838 and in 1839 purchasing an additional lot from his brother Dominicus.

The 1850 McLean Township of Shelby County lists Joseph age 40, wife Elizabeth age 36. Clara age 7, Mary age 6, Catherine age2, and Joseph age 6 months. The children Clara and Marie Elizabeth were baptized at St. Augustine's in Minster, Ohio and the other children at St, Michaels in Ft. Loramie.

The 1860 McLean Township Shelby County census lists Joseph age 50, his 2nd wife Crescentia age33, Mary age 15, Catherine age 12, Joseph age 8,Lena age 6 and daughter Clara Buschmann age 15 and her husband Harry Buschmann age 24. The family at one time moved to St. Cloud, Minnesota but later returned to Ohio. Joseph is buried at St. John's in Maria Stein, Ohio

She married Jacob Ulliman, son of Jacob Ulliman and Agnes Trautman on 09 Mar 1876 in Berlin, Ohio. He was born on 29 Sep 1849 in Ft. Loramie, Ohio. He died on 03 Aug 1921 in Springfield, Ohio.

According to the death certificate of Margaret, her birth was listed as February 29, 1855 but this cannot be correct as 1855 was not a leap year. The Hummer Family was related to the Willman Family of Ft. Loramie and it is believed they were from Switzerland.

According to a note from Pat Sassen Daugherty Jacob was born in Alsace, Germany but according to his death certificate he was born in Ohio, probably Ft. Loramie. In writing to the Shelby County, Ohio, Court House, they advised there were no records before 1867 and did not know where they could be found. The US Census Records of 1870 listed Jacob Ullerman as a low shoemaker residing in Ft. Loramie, Ohio. There is also Shelby County Census Record of 1880 listing a Jacob Ullerman which I believe was the original spelling of Ulliman.

According to Jean Ulliman Ryan the original spelling was Uhlerman. She also advised that Jacob was previously married to Caroline Eschman, born 1850, died 1874, and they had one child named Maria Emma, born 1874 and died 1874. From this I assume mother and child died in childbirth. Also according to Jean Ryan there is a Jacob Uhlerman, born 1848 in USA, but no county, city or state, found at St. Michael's Church in Fort Recovery, Ohio. This record also list his father as Jacob Uhlerman and his mother as M. Trautman.

The 1880 Shelby County McLean Township census records show Jacob Ullerman, wife Mary age 27 born in Ohio, son John age 3, and son George age 1. The death certificate of Mary ( or Margaret) shows her as being born in 1855 which would only make her 25 at the time of the census. The age of John would be correct but the age of George would have been 2. It also lists Barbara Hummer, mother in law, as living with them.

The 1900 Shelby County McLean Township census records shows Jacob as 51 which is probably correct as census records were taken at the beginning of the year and his birthday was not until September. It also show his wife Maggie age 44 born in February 1856 which is another discrepancy. It also shows a son August (our father) born in 1887 which is another discrepancy as his birth certificate shows he was born in 1886. Also listed is a son John age 8 born in 1891 and according to the records I have he was born in 1890,, A daughter Frances age 5 is also listed and a son Frank age 1.

The 1920 Clark County census records show Jacob living at 332 Avondale Ave, Springfield, owned house free and clear, age 71, born in Ohio, parents in Germany, works as shoemaker. Wife Margaret Ulliman, age 68, born in Ohio works at home. Son George, age 41,born on Ohio, occupation unreadable. And daughter Frances, age 25, born in Ohio, occupation unreadable.

Jacob Ulliman and Margaret Frances Hummer had the following children:

CATHERINE BARBARA HUMMER was born on 06 Aug 1856 in Ft. Loramie, Ohio. She died on 01 Jan 1937 in Toledo, Ohio. She married August Mertz on 14 Jun 1881 in Fort Loramie, Ohio.

Catherine Hummer Mertz is recorded in "The Annals of St. Michael's" as the donor of a stained glass window of St. Catherine at St. Michael's Church in Fort Loramie, Ohio. Catherine and August were married at St. Michael's. Catherine is buried at Toledo at Calvary Cemetery.

On October 28, 1861 John Peter enrolled at Napoleon, Ohio in Co. A, 68th Regiment of Ohio Volunteers to serve 3 years during the Civil War. He was mustered in as a private at Camp Latty, a training camp in Henry County, Ohio.
In December 1861 John Peter is appointed 1st Sergeant. Active Service for the 68th Regiment began in February 1862 with the capture of Ft. Donelson in Tennessee.
March 9-14 they were on an expedition to Purdy and operations at Crump's Landing.
April 6-7 they were at but not engaged in the Battle of Shiloh. Shiloh Monument #M139 indicates that the 68th was left to guard stores at Crump's Landing.
April 29-May30 saw a siege of Corrinth, Mississippi after which the regiment marched to Purdy and then to Bolivar with duty there till September.
July 20. 1862 he is recorded as sick in the post hospital at Bolivar and on September 6, 1862 he dies as a causality of war : cause of death, chronic diarrhea.

John Peter is buried near his father Peter and mother Marie and the gravestone shows his Union Regiment and Company, rather worn but still legible. According to Shelby County graves registration his body was removed from internment in Tennessee to Old St. Michael's Cemetery where he was reburied on 22 September 1862.

After John Peters death Adelaide filed a Declaration for Army Pension and signs it Mary A Humer and that is the name she continues to use. Then on March 24, 1863 she remarries to George Shoner. On January 20, 1866 George filed a claim as guardian of Mary Eva Hummer, Mary and John Peters daughter, for pension rights to the minor child.

The 1870 DeKalb County, Indiana census Adelaide and George Shoner and their three children are listed as residing in that county. Mary Eva Hummer is not listed. Who she lived with at that time is unknown. However, in the 1880 census the family is reunited and another child of Mary and George is listed as Della Shoner age 7. living in Waterloo, Indiana.

The 1900 census still lists them living in Waterloo. The 1920 Census shows Mary Adelaide now widowed and living with her daughter Mary Eva Hummer Kunz and her husband Joseph living in Toledo, Ohio at 2235 Franklin Ave.

MAGDALENA HUMMER was born on 03 Mar 1841 in Aix-Sur-Cloie, Belgium. She died on 02 Dec 1919 in Ft, Loramie, Ohio. She married John Henreich Willman in Nov 1864. He was born on 09 Feb 1829 in Ft, Loramie, Ohio. He died on 13 Apr 1915.

The Willman Family ran a dry goods store in Ft. Loramie for decades. Frank and Joseph took over the store in 1907 and in 1912 the store was destroyed by fire and then rebuilt. The Willmans continued to live in Ft. Loramie until their death.

I found a WWW1 draft card registration for John Peter Ulliman living at 216 Highland, Springfield, Ohio, born Jan 15, 1877. He is listed as white and native born He is listed as working at Kelly Motor Coach Co, Springfield, but I can not make out his occupation. His nearest living relative is listed as Mrs. Catherine Ulliman . In the notes section he is listed as blind in one eye.

In the 1920 census records I found John Ulliman living at 214 Highland Ave. owned house with mortgage, age 43, born in Ohio and works as machinist. Wife Catherine , age 42, born in Ohio and works at home. Son Arthur, age 15, born in Ohio and works as clerk. Son Carl, age 14, born in Ohio and in school. Daughter Veronica, age 11, born in Ohio and in school. Daughter Hermine, age 8, born in Ohio and in school. Daughter Rose, age 1, born in Ohio and at home.

I found 1930 census records for George and Rose Ulliman on State Rt. 54, Urbana, Ohio, Champaigne County. Also listed were Louise H. Ulliman age 7, Josepha W. Ulliman age 6, and Julia D. Ulliman age 5.

The 1942-1944 city directory lists George as living at RD 1 Urbana and his occupation as machine operator at SPECo. This was a surprise as George ran a farm for years in Urbana. In the 1944-1945 Springfield City Directory George and his wife Rose are listed as living at 1757 Stratford Place and his occupation as machine Operator at SPECo. Also living at the Stratford place address were daughters Josephine, occupation not listed, Julia and Louise, occupation bench hd at SPECo.

The 1940 census lists George age 61, living in Urbana, Champaign, Ohio along with his wife Rose age 56, Louise age 17, Josepha age 16, and Julia age 15. It lists his occupation as farmer.

I found 1910 Census Records for William & Mary Sassen Ulliman living at 1319 Warder St,, Springfield, Ohio, Clark County. Also listed with them were Jacob J. Ulliman age 5, Edward G. Ulliman age 3, Mary M. Ulliman age 1 and 8 months. Also listed were brothers George Ulliman age 30, Edward A Ulliman age 23, and Joseph William age 19.

Also in the 1920 records I found William Ulliman living at 110 Lagonda Ave. owned house with mortgage, age 39, born in Ohio, occupation unreadable. Wife Mary, age 36, born in Holland and works at home. Son Jacob, age 16, born in Ohio and in school. Son Edward, age 13, born in Ohio and in school. Daughter Mary, age 12, born in Ohio and in school. Daughter Loretta, age 9, born in Ohio and in school.

I found a WWW1 draft registration for William Jacob Ulliman living at 34 Lagonda Ave., Springfield, Ohio. His birth is listed as Nov. 23, 1880 (which is different from my original date) and his occupation is foreman at James Leffel Co, Springfield. Nearest living relative is Mrs. Mary Frances Ulliman at 34 Lagonda Ave. He is listed as natural born and white.

Also listed were Margaret Hoelscher age 8, Paul Hoelscher age 5, Francis Hoelscher age 2 , Alma Ernst age 20, and Frances Winner age 22. Also found World War I draft registration which listed his birth date as May 26, 1884.

According to the birth certificate received from Shelby County, Ohio, his birthday was listed as September 15, 1886, not September 26, 1886, which is the date we always celebrated his birthday. Also he was listed as Augustus E. Ullerman and his parents as Jacob Ullerman and Margretha Hummer. Edward and Anna Sassen Ulliman are buried in Springfield, Ohio at St. Bernard's Cemetery.

When Anna Sassen Ulliman died in 1938, Edward remarried on November 22, 1940 to Mabel Peacock Murray, born September 24, 1888, place of birth unknown. Mabel had a son from a previous marriage named Edward Murray, birth date unknown. Mabel died in Tucson, Arizona on October 8, 1961 and is buried at South Lawn Cemetery in Tucson.

The 1920 Clark County census records show Edward ,living at 1611 Edwards Ave., Springfield, age 33, owned house with mortgage, born in Ohio, occupation inventor. Wife Anna , age 33, born in Holland, works at home. Son Joseph, age 8, born in Ohio and in school. Son Francis J. (or Jerome), age 6, born in Ohio and in school. Daughter Eleanor, age 4, born in Ohio and at home. Daughter Ursula, age 3, born in Ohio, and at home. Son Eugene. age 4 months, born in Ohio and at home. It lists Pop's occupation as inventor (but this isn't clear} as I always thought he was an engineer. He did have several patents, however.

Anna Sassen Ulliman, born Johanna Marie, is listed as born in Holland emigrating in 1889. This date may be wrong as I found a date of 1890 as the year of emigration from the Hardenberg Historical Society. Edward ,married to Anna Sassen, also had a brother William Ulliman married to Anna's sister, Mary Sassen, born as Hendrika Francisca Sassen.

The 1930 Census shows Edward and Anna Ulliman living at 1611 Edwards Ave., Springfield, Ohio. both age 48, along with their children Joseph age 19, Jerome age 17, Eleanor age 13, Ursula age 13, Eugene age 10, Angela age 7, Mary age 6, and Teresa age 2. It lists Edward's occupation as tool supervisor. It also lists Joseph and Jerome's occupation but they are not too clear. (It looks like Joseph is listed as a stenographer which doesn't make too much sense. Jerome's is listed as tool maker which sounds more reasonable). The census also shows that the house is owned with a value of $3500.00.

The 1935-1939 Springfield City Directory lists Edward A. Ulliman as residing at 1611 Edwards Ave. and employed as general superintendent at National Supply Company.
The 1937-1938 City directory lists Edward and Anna at 1611 Edwards Ave. and his employment as a salesman for Eagle Engineering.
The 1938-1939 city directory lists Edward and Anna at the same address and his employment as plant superintendent for National Supply Company.
The 1940-1942 city directory lists only Edward living at the same address and employed as a tool designer for National Supply Company. There is another city directory for 1940-1942 listing Edward as residing at 1757 Pembroke Road and his wife Mabel. His occupation is only listed as chief engineer but not any company.
