Dominic is recorded in the McClean Township section of the Quadrennial Census for Shelby County as early as 1839. He filed intent for naturalization in Shelby County in 1843 and is listed in the 1860 census of McLean Township with what may be a daughter, Mary and son-in-law Adam Fox.

PIERRE (PETER) HUMMER was born on 18 Mar 1804 in Aix-Sur-Cloie, Belgium. He died on 21 Feb 1869 in Ft. Loramie, Ohio. He married (1) MARIE DAMGI, daughter of Nicolas Damgi and Margarite Fichart on 21 Feb 1832 in Aix-Sur-Cloie, Belgium. She was born on 10 Dec 1804 in Battincourt, Belgium. She died on 28 Aug 1846 in Ft. Loramie, Ohio. He married (2) BARBARA SEILMANN between 1848-1850 in Ft. Loramie. She was born in Oesdorf, Bavaria. She died on 04 Apr 1881 in Ft. Loramie, Ohio.

According to records received from Carolyn Ahlbrand, Peter Hummer emigrated from Belgium and on June 26,1846 arrived in New York on the ship Neree. The passenger list shows Peter and his wife Marie, daughters Marie (Helene), Janette (Marie Yanne), Magdalena and son John Peter, who would all live to adulthood, marry and have children. The passenger list also shows 3 children who would not live to adulthood: Barbara (Bobelie), Catherine and Dominique. Peter is recorded in "The Annals of St. Michael's"(1903) along with brothers Joseph and Dominic as founders of St. Michael's Parish, Berlin, Ohio. (Berlin was the previous name of Ft. Loramie) Also on the passenger list is Peter's brother Jean and his wife Marguetite and their three children Marie, Anne and Josephine.

In July 1846 Peter purchased farmland south of Berlin (Ft. Loramie) by Basinburg (a now defunct town) in Cynthian Township, where Peter and Barbara eventually lived with their daughters.

The 1850 McLean Township census shows a 3 month old daughter Marie living with Peter and Barbara but this could be a census record as no other record of this child exist elsewhere. It also lists a "Mercian" who is probably Marie Yanne (Jane) age 17, Peter(Pierre) age 13 and Magdalena age 9, all children from Peter's first marriage.

The 1860 Cynthian Township census records shows Peter and Barbara living with Magdalena age 29, ,\Marguerite age 5 and Catherine age 4 Peter, Barbara, Marguerite and Catherine continued to live at the farm property for several years . On Sunday 21 February, 1869 Peter went to town and after being thrown out of the local tavern, for a disagreement between French & German factions in town, he stopped in the corner of a field just outside of town where he was found the next morning frozen to death. There is a record of this in the Shelby County Democrat, Sidney, Ohio on March 5, 1869. This was at a time when the Austro Prussian and Franco Prussian War was taking place.

Barbara evidently traveled from Oesdorf, Bavaria to the USA and arrived in New Orleans on June 13, 1845. There were no records found of her birth or family except that her maiden name was recorded on baptismal records when her two daughters were born. This information received from Carolyn Ahlbrand

The 1870 census records show Barbara and her two daughters Marguerite and Catherine living on the family farm. The estate was not settled until 1872 and the farm sold in 1877

The 1880 census shows Barbara living with her daughter Marguerite Hummer Ulliman and Jacob Ulliman.

Jean Hummer arrived in the US with his brother Peter on June 26, 1846 with their families. Jean and Marguerite settled in Seneca County, Ohio about 100 miles northeast of Ft. Loramie where they are recorded in the 1850 and 1860 census.

The 1850 Seneca census shows Jean, Marguerite and daughters Marie age 13, Anna age 11, and Joseph age 3 plus another son John age 1.

The 1860 Seneca census shows all of the above plus another son Peter age 8 and a daughter Anna age 5.

JOSEPH HUMMER was born on 30 Nov 1811 in Aix-Sur-Cloie, Belgium. He died on 18 May 1891 in Maria Stein, Ohio. He married (1) ELIZABETH RINGEMAN on 12 Apr 1842 in Minster, Ohio. She died on 24 Jan 1858. He married (2) CRESCENTIA KUNKLER on 28 Jun 1859 in Ft. Loramie, Ohio.

Joseph is the earliest found immigrant record with his arrival as a single man age 25 at the port of New York on July 27, 1837 on the ship Great Britain. He is also recorded as purchasing 2 lots in Berlin, Ohio in 1838 and in 1839 purchasing an additional lot from his brother Dominicus.

The 1850 McLean Township of Shelby County lists Joseph age 40, wife Elizabeth age 36. Clara age 7, Mary age 6, Catherine age2, and Joseph age 6 months. The children Clara and Marie Elizabeth were baptized at St. Augustine's in Minster, Ohio and the other children at St, Michaels in Ft. Loramie.

The 1860 McLean Township Shelby County census lists Joseph age 50, his 2nd wife Crescentia age33, Mary age 15, Catherine age 12, Joseph age 8,Lena age 6 and daughter Clara Buschmann age 15 and her husband Harry Buschmann age 24. The family at one time moved to St. Cloud, Minnesota but later returned to Ohio. Joseph is buried at St. John's in Maria Stein, Ohio

MARIE ( HELENE) HUMMER was born on 03 Apr 1833 in Aix-Sur-Cloie, Belgium. She died on 10 Sep 1904 in Ft. Loramie, Ohio. She married William Sherman on 06 Jul 1854 in Fort Loramie, Ohio. He was born in Ft Loramie, Ohio. He died in Ft Loramie, Ohio.

JANETTE (MARIE JANNE) HUMMER was born on 30 Aug 1834 in Aix-Sur-Cloie, Belgium. She died on 15 Dec 1934 in Toledo, Ohio. She married JAMES PILLIOD.

On October 28, 1861 John Peter enrolled at Napoleon, Ohio in Co. A, 68th Regiment of Ohio Volunteers to serve 3 years or during the Civil War. He was mustered in as a private at Camp Latty, a training camp in Henry County, Ohio. In December 1861 John Peter is appointed 1st Sergeant.

Active Service for the 68th Regiment began in February 1862 with the capture of Ft. Donelson in Tennessee.

March 9-14 they were on an expedition to Purdy and operations at Crump's Landing.

April 6-7 they were at but not engaged in the Battle of Shiloh. Shiloh Monument #M139 indicates that the 68th was left to guard stores at Crump's Landing.

April 29-May30 saw a siege of Corrinth, Mississippi after which the regiment marched to Purdy and then to Bolivar with duty there till September.

July 20. 1862 he is recorded as sick in the post hospital at Bolivar and on September 6, 1862 he dies as a causality of war : cause of death, chronic diarrhea.

John Peter is buried near his father Peter and mother Marie and the gravestone shows his Union Regiment and Company, rather worn but still legible. According to Shelby County graves registration his body was removed from internment in Tennessee to Old St. Michael's Cemetery where he was reburied on 22 September 1862.

After John Peters death Adelaide filed a Declaration for Army Pension and signs it Mary A Hummer and that is the name she continues to use. Then on March 24, 1863 she remarries to George Shoner. On January 20, 1866 George filed a claim as guardian of Mary Eva Hummer, Mary and John Peters daughter, for pension rights to the minor child.

The 1870 DeKalb County, Indiana census Adelaide and George Shoner and their three children are listed as residing in that county. Mary Eva Hummer is not listed. Who she lived with at that time is unknown. However, in the 1880 census the family is reunited and another child of Mary and George is listed as Della Shoner age 7. living in Waterloo, Indiana.

The 1900 census still lists them living in Waterloo. The 1920 Census shows Mary Adelaide now widowed and living with her daughter Mary Eva Hummer Kunz and her husband Joseph living in Toledo, Ohio at 2235 Franklin Ave.

Pierre (John Peter) Hummer and Mary Adelaide Harris had the following child:

MADELAINE HUMMER was born on 03 Mar 1841 in Aix-Sur-Cloie, Belgium. She died on 02 Dec 1919 in Ft, Loramie, Ohio. She married John Henreich Willman in Nov 1864. He was born on 09 Feb 1829 in Ft, Loramie, Ohio. He died on 13 Apr 1915.

The Willman Family ran a dry goods store in Ft. Loramie for decades. Frank and Joseph took over the store in 1907 and in 1912 the store was destroyed by fire and then rebuilt. The Willmans continue to live in Ft. Loramie until their death. J

Catherine Hummer Mertz is recorded in "The Annals of St. Michael's" as the donor of a stained glass window of St. Catherine at St. Michael's Church in Fort Loramie, Ohio Catherine and August were married at St. Michael's. Catherine is buried at Toledo at Calvary Cemetery.

The 1900 census shows Mary Eva and her husband Joseph Kunz living at 2235 Franklin Ave., Toledo, Ohio with their son John Homer and the 1910 census records a daughter, Marie, age 11. The 1910 census also records 5 boarders, Clara Pilliod and her 4 children, Francis, Angela, Urban, and Bernard. Clara Pilliod was born a Sherman (the daughter of Marie Hummer - John Peter Hummer's older sister.)

The 1910 Census shows John Homer Kunz, John Peter Hummer's grandson, listed as age 24 born in Ohio and his wife Loretta age 23 born in Indiana. However he is listed as Homer J Kunz. He lives in Toledo and is superintendent in a quarry company. The 1920 census records Homer J Kunz age 33 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with his wife Loretta age 31, son John B age 9, Bernard P age 7 and Robert C age 5.
