According to the records at the Hardenberg Historical Society, Joseph and Maria and their children born in Holland emigrated in 1890 but I have found no record of the exact date, ship arrived on or where they landed and when they were naturalized.

A great deal of the information on the Sassen Family came from Adri Stuart who answered my message on the Family Tree web site. He lives in Apeldorn, Holland and is distantly related through his wife who was a member or the Kotterick Family.

Also a great deal was received from Reinhardt Cloppenburg of Meppen, Germany. He is a genealogy volunteer for the Catholic Church in Meppen. According to him the Church kept many birth, death and marriage records for many years back. He traced the records back to our gggggrandfather Hermanus Henrikus Sassen born in 1750 in Germany.

According to records at St. Bernard's Cemetery in Springfield, Ohio, Joseph and Maria also had a set of twins, a girl named Teresa and a boy, unnamed, who are buried with them.

Frederick (or Fred) died of brain fever. The death was reported by the mother, but no name given, and the address was listed as 234 Lagonda Ave., Springfield, Ohio, which is where Joseph and Maria lived. The death record can be found in Springfield at the Clark County Records office in Volumn 2, page 436.

I found several census records for the Sassen Family. The first was the 1900 Clark County, Ohio which shows Joseph Sassen and family living at 234 Lagonda Ave., Springfield, Ohio. It gives Joseph Sassen as 44 born in 1856, but his birth certificate gives his year of birth as 1853. His wife Mary (Maria) listed as 43 born in 1856 but my records show her as born in 1854. Henry is listed as 18 born in 1881, Mary as 16 born in 1884, Anna as 13 born in 1886, John as 10 born in 1869, Joseph as 6 born in 1894, Aloysius as 4 born in 1896, and Frederick as 5 months born in 1899. There is also a William Sassen, age 29 born in 1871 listed as a nephew born in Germany. There are also three boarders listed, John Lehmkerhl, Bernard Wolken, and William Ulliman age 19 born in 1880, which is correct, as he is our uncle who later married Mary Sassen.

The 1900 census record shows Jaseph as NA which I assume means naturalized American, but Maria, Henry, Mary, Anna, and John are listed as NR which I assume means non registered. Why they are listed as NR instead of NA is not known as I would assume they were alll naturalized at the same time. So far I have found no immigration records. Their place of birth is listed as Germany, not Holland. Joseph, Aloysius and Frederick are listed as being born in Ohio. Aunt Loretta is not listed as she was married in 1898 and I found no census record for her and her husband Frank Farrell.

The 1910 records show the Sassen Family still living at the Lagonda Ave. address. It list Joseph as head of household, age 53, married 33 years, born in Holland, emigrated in 1889, speaks English and works as laborer for the railroad. Wife Mary (Maria), age 53, married 33 years, mother of 11 children with 7 living, born in Holland, emigrated in 1889, speaks English, no occupation listed. Daughter Anna, age 23, born in Holland, emigrated in 1889, speaks English, no occupation listed. Son John, age 20, born in Holland, emigrated in 1889, speaks English, no occupation listed. Son Joe, age 15, born in Ohio, speaks English, no occupation. Son Aloysius, age 14, born in Ohio, speaks English, no occupation.

The 1920 records show the family still on Lagonda Ave. It lists Joseph as head of household, house owned free and clear, age 66, born in Holland, emigrated in 1889, working as laborer for railroad. Wife Mary (Maria), age 66, emigrated in 1889, born in Holland and works at home. Son Ollie (Aloysius), age 24, born in Ohio, occupation listed but unreadable. It also lists two roomers named Dewey Barnes, age 21, born in Ohio, occupation unreadable, and Odell Barnes, age 26, born in Ohio, occupation unreadable.

Also in the 1920 census I found Henry Sassen living at 1190 Lagonda Ave, head of household, owned house with Mortgage, age 39, works as laborer in machine shop. His wife Catherine, age 39, born in Ohio and works at home. Daughter Patricia, age 9, born in Ohio and in school. Son Robert, age 4, born in Ohio and still at home. It also list John Dennehy, brother in law, age 36, born in Ohio, occupation unreadable. Harrison Dennehy, brother in law, age 27, born in Ohio, occupation unreadable. And Roger Garner, roomer, age 26, born in Ohio, occupation unreadable.

With the help of my nephew Michael Ulliman I was able to obtain naturalization records of Grandfather Harm Joseph Sassen from the Clark County Library in Springfield, Ohio. They show that John Joseph Sassen applied for naturalization on September 30, 1890 and received citizenship on October 22, 1895. I assume that John is the American version of Harm. It does not show his wife or children who were born in Holland but I believe that at that time when a man applied for citizenship the whole family was included.

November 2006

I was able to obtain ship passenger manifests from Ancestry.com showing the arrival of Harm Joseph Sassen and family in 1890. They arrived in New York on September 8, 1890 aboard the TSS New Amsterdam of the Holland America Line. The ship sailed from Amsterdam, Netherlands with a stop at Boulogne Sur Mer, France.
